Document Summary

Excess protein is stored as amino acids. Adipose tissue (triglycerides) is stored as fatty acids when in excess. Use the stored form of these to burn energy when losing weight. The first hormone (glucagon- secreted by alpha cells) is released when your blood glucose levels get low. Tells liver to break down stored glycogen into glucose and send throughout your body. Next, ketogenesis produces ketones which come from acetyl. Ketones are dispersed throughout body to be used as energy. Direct calorimetry is used to determine energy expenditure because it is heat given off in chamber. Indirect calorimetry is used to measure energy expenditure by looking at oxygen use and carbon dioxide production, it is not practical in free-living individuals. Lastly, can use double-labeled water where you ingest isotopes of oxygen and hydrogen. It is more practical and the preferred method in clinics.
