Globalization, Diversity, and World Regional Geography
A. Types of Regions
Formal regions
o Places tied together by common characteristics
Nodal regions (ex. Airline systems)
o Places tied together by common connection point
Functional regions (ex. Federal Reserve Districts)
o Places tied together by common authority
Vernacular regions are popularly used without strict definition
B. Globalization
Inreasing integration of orld’s regions
o People, inc. labor and education
o Business
o Society and culture
o Sports and other entertainment
Early globalization- the British Empire (and others)
Contemporary globalization- cooperate empires
Global cities- London, Tokyo, NY, and others
Enabling technologies brings places closer together
Key factors include changes in:
o transport; communications; multinational corporations (transnational corps.);
trade and financial policy liberalization; global institutions
The UN is the premier global institution
o Has a large number of affiliates
o The Security Council of the UN is largely concerned with peacekeeping
o The General Assembly of the UN is focused more on development issues
o The international Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank Group are both
nominally UN organizations
But they are headquartered in Washington, D.C., not New York
The G-8 consists of the U.S., Japan, Germany, the U.K., France, Italy, Canada, and Russia
(and EU reps.)
It has a leadership role in current World Bank initiatives:
o African development
o Climate change
o Debt relief
The G20 is designed to be more inclusive than the G8, especially of developing countries
The WTO emerged from the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) in 1995 it
has 145+ members. Russia joined the WTO in mid- 2012.
The Basel Conention regulates trade in hazardous aste
Not all global trade is endorsed, but even illegal activity is facilitated by relative ease of
international movement (and corruption)

Globalization should increase economic growth, but many people have concerns about
other effects
o social justice
o environment
o sovereignty
o cultural diversity
For example, many people are concerned about the loss of native languages due to the
idespread use of gloal ones
The widespread use of English (a global language?) is associated with a loss of linguistic
diversity
but there is a backlash in some places
(e.g. Jamaica, the EU)
Foreign language instruction is growing in the U.S. often business related
Preference for globalization varies widely from country to country

Airline systems: places tied together by common connection point, functional regions (ex. Federal reserve districts: places tied together by common authority, vernacular regions are popularly used without strict definition, globalization. What are three of the key issues surrounding u. s. immigration policy? (see chapter 3) One key issue surrounding u. s. immigration policy is how many legal immigrants should be allowed to come into the country. There are 43. 3 million people who are foreign-born living in the united stated. 13. 1 million of these people are legal immigrants and 11. 1 million are illegal migrants. The key arguments for this topic are that by letting too many immigrants into the country many american jobs will be taken. On the contrary, it can also be looked at that by letting in more immigrants, businesses and the economy can boost and prosper.
