Document Summary

Part i bivariate tests of hypotheses: in the 1970s, the search was on for a quick fix to the problem of juvenile delinquency in the united states. And from deterrence theory, the scared straight program was developed and implemented in new jersey in the mid-1970s. You"ve heard about scared straight a few times in this course. The program involves taking adolescents who have been arrested for allegedly committing crimes to a prison for a day-long tour. And the scariest part of the tour that is believed to instantly scare the impulse to continue committing criminal acts out of the juveniles is a two-hour session in which they meet prisoners serving life-sentences face-to-face. The prisoners yell, curse and make verbal threats of violence while presenting their lectures of what prison life is like and what the juveniles" futures will be like if those juveniles continue into lives of crime. Social science researchers immediately doubted the program"s impact.
