The prince was his attempt to get back a political position. Dedication in discourse contradicts the dedication in the prince. Since he was unable to acquire power with the prince he wrote the discourse. Machiavelli died alone, without power, in outskirts of florence. The prince by machiavelli was suggested reading for the president and used to instruct rulers.
