- choose 2 for 2 essays
- bring blue book
- write legibly (with ink pen)
Guiding Framework
- basic (generic 4-5 paragraph essay)
- clear argument main claim (thesis)
- ex. “This policy will not reduce violent crime because it relies on general
deterrence., a weakly supported theory of crime prevention.”
- supporting statements
- 1, 2, 3 (topic sentences)
- provide evidence from book, class, etc.
- ex. “The US has a high homicide rate (5 per 100,000), in spite of its high
incarceration rate (666 per 100,000).”
- cogency of argument
- one that has evidence + some kind of clear logic
- similar to writing a persuasive essay
Minor Points
- take time thinking of response to argument/puzzle
- don’t jump right into it
- outline logic of argument, either in blue book or midterm exam sheet
- “roadmap”
- try to weave in “buzz words” (ex. recidivism)
- power of argument
