Document Summary
Open-ended questions: qualitative, participant"s own words, difficult to compare. Closed: quantitative, limited options, easy to compare (ex: y/n, multiple choice, forced- alternative, likert-type, semantic differential) Blend in, wait it out, measure trace behavior: forced alternative: choose btwn 2 extreme choices, eliminates fence-sitting", likert-type: odd # of options; strong. Make observations accurate & objective statements (ex: i am very happy with my life. 1-strongly disagree/almost never; 5-strongly agree/almost always); extremes span out symmetrically. Semantic differential: numeric scale that is anchored w/ adjectives to rate target object (ex: overall quality of professor: 1-profs get f"s too; 5-a real gem: problems: (1) choices are not exhaustive; (2) choices are not mutually exclusive. With survey questions, avoid: leading questions ( how short was napoleon? ), asking about unknown info, double-barreled ( would this book be useful to students and teachers? ), long questions, negation ( do you oppose not cutting down the tree? ), misinterpretation.
