LIN 1 Midterm: PSC 154 - Exam 1
Document Summary
The example archbishop tutu gave is of a mother giving birth. They go through the immense pain of labor but after the baby is born, comes a mother"s joy. It is one of the incredible things that joy can come so quickly from suffering. Dalai lama says a lot of the problems we are facing are of our own creation, like war and violence. The contradiction is that nobody wants problems or suffering but there are many problems and suffering because of what we have created. He says we need to be responsible not just for ourselves but have a greater concern for others" well-being. Everyone seeks happiness, joyfulness, but from outside from money, from power, from big cars, from big houses. Most people never pay much attention to the ultimate source of a happy life, which is inside, not outside. Exultation (at having accomplished a difficult or daring task) Schadenfreude/unhealthy jubilation (relishing in someone else"s suffering)
