VOCABULARY:
-Sex: BIOLOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS which defines humans as FEMALE or MALE
oChromosomes, hormones, genitalia
oNot always clearly define – ex. intersex
-Gender: socially constructed roles and relationships, behaviors, attitudes, personality
traits
oBiology comes with you, gender is added later
-Essentialism: belief that things are the way they are because of nature
oUnchanging and unchangeable
oEx. some people believe that black people are more violent naturally
-Social construction(ism): things that are constructed by members of a society
oOpposite of something that is essential
oMust follow two rules
Must APPEAR that the thing we are looking at is inevitable
That thing does not NEED to be the way it is, it is NOT inevitable after all
oCategories that we’ve made to explain to ourselves how the world works
oDecades of traditions and assumptions  social construct
-Socialization: how one learns about and ends up complying with social constructs of
oGender class, race, etc.
oWe are usually unaware of socialization and how it leads us to perpetuate social
construct
oEx. girls are pretty, boys are strong
-Race: biologically engineered features
oSkin color, skin tone, eye color, hair color, tendency toward developing certain
disease
oRace can’t be changed, no matter where you grew up
-Ethnicity: where in the world an individual is SOCIALIZED, what language they speak, the
food they eat, etc.
oChangeable
oTradition, learned behavior, customs
oThere’s time involved in creating ethnicity – can’t go to China once and be
ethnically Chinese
-Sexual orientation: who you want to bang (ex. heterosexual, homosexual, bisexual, etc.)
oRomantic/sexual attraction to an individual of a certain sex or gender
-Sexuality: how you want to bang
ohow an individual expresses sexual desire and erotic pleasure
oex. cross dressing
-Socioeconomic status: individual’s economic and social position related to others in
society
