Chapter 1: Fundamental Properties of Light
1.1 What is Light?
- Light goes from the source (sun, light bulb) to the object (book etc.), bounces off or
travels through he object and tot he detector (eye)
- Sometimes light goes directly to the eye from these sources, or self luminous objects
like T.V.
- In the vacuum of space, a beam that is not directed at the observer canon be seen at
all
- When light falls on ordinary objects, some of it is redirected (scattered) and you can
only see an object if it scatters the light
- Light travels in straight lines, unless it hits some object and changes direction
- Light does take time to get one place to another
- Light is faster than sound
- Approximately 186,000 miles per second
- c, fundamental constant of the velocity of light in a vacuum 300,000 km/sec
- speed is the same for all different colors of lights
- Light does not need a medium to travel through, it can travel through a vacuum
