Document Summary

Diff btwn peptide, amine, & steroid hormones are, including the diff in receptor signaling. Protein & peptide hormones (amino acids): bind to specific receptors on the surface of a cell & activate chemical signals - second messengers - inside the cell. Steroid hormones (gonadal & adrenal): cross the cell membrane & bind to receptors inside the cell. Steroid-receptor complex: binds to specific regions of dna & alter them. Steroid hormones: derived from cholesterol, made of 4 rings of carbon atoms. Gonadal hormones: released by the testes & ovaries. Hormones associated with anterior & posterior pituitary, & their functions. Hormones - 2 parts: posterior pituitary: affect social behaviors. Oxytocin: involved in reproductive & parenting behavior, uterine contractions & the milk letdown reflex (mother & child bond - breast feeding) Vasopressin: promotes water conservation ( urine output) & constricts blood vessels to bp: anterior pituitary. Tropic hormone: hormones that affect the secretions of other endocrine glands.
