Perception: making sense of the world around us is integral to all facets of the human experience and is especially critical to communication. Helps us make sense of the world around us. Human comm will always be a process of perceiving meaning, and not simply a matter of objectively interpreting a message or observing reality. Communication is the key to bridging perceptual differences. Implicitly & gradually (ex: convergence in a relationship) Perception: the social and cognitive process by which individuals. Involves 3 sub-process: selection, organization, interpretation (all over lap) These stages are not a distinct sequence, they overlap. What we attend to or choose for further processing. Selection is necessary were exposed to more sensory info than we can consciously process. Selection (and all stages of perceptions) is a combination of: voluntary elements (focus, motivation, involuntary elements (cognitive structures, socialization)
