Basically, changes to nationalism are really changes in the collective identity which is the the glue that hold everyone together. The authors argue that nationalism is not something that is fixed. It can change because of changes in the internal society. Social movements: organization of individuals who share something. The sense of nationhood can change when subnational groups push for greater inclusion and more attention and this changes the nature of the nation. Collective who"s in and who"s out (inclusion vs exclusion) Authors suggesting that this glue is not something fixed. It can change b/c of changes internal to that society. Social movements- they are large, sometimes informal, groupings of individuals or organizations which focus on specific political or social issues.
