Goal: integrate former slaves into political and social life of the south. Because its goal was admirable and failure because it failed to achieve them in a lasting manner. Emancipation of the slaves, january of 1863, 4 million enslaved in the south that were now free. Radical republicans said yes however others said no because they have no education yet so hold off a little bit. Other people believed the former slaves should play a subservient role in society. Mobility: they moved and could go wherever they please, often to look for their broken families, sometimes just to show that they could. Even when they were offered their old job, they would leave to feel free.
