Document Summary

21. 4 heterozygote advantage is a very important concept: why natural selection cannot fashion perfect organisms. Natural selection does not always result in the best possible option. It is important to understand why this is the case: hox gene is a gene that has been duplicated, duplication of chromosomes is important for evolution. Conditions of the hardy weinberg principle: no mutations, random mating, no natural selection, large population, no gene flow. Typically, the surviving populations is no longer genetically representative of the original population: sexual reproduction then shuffles existing alleles and deals them at random to produce individual genotypes. Three mechanisms that contribute to this shuffling: crossing over, independent assortment of chromosomes, and fertilization. The combined effects of these three mechanisms ensure that sexual reproduction rearranges existing alleles into fresh combinations each generation, providing much of he genetic variation that makes evolution possible: asians are more lactose & tolerant.
