Od can cause severe respiratory depression, cns depression, coma. When given by iv, hypotension, tachycardia, muscular weakness, and respiratory depression are common. Iv form: shock, coma, depressed vital signs, ob patients, infants. Tablet form: infants, glaucoma, or within 14 days of maoi therapy. Should not be used for pain relief, can increase a patient s sensitivity to pain. Im injections may produce a local inflammatory reaction. Increases metabolism of other drugs, reducing their effectiveness. Should not be taken with other cns depressants. Kava and chamomile may cause increased drug effect. Effective against most types of seizures except absence seizures. Petit mal, grand mal, mixed, akinetic myoclonic seizures. Dysrhythmias, severe hypotension, hyperglycemia; headache, nystagmus, ataxia, confusion, insomnia. Peripheral neuropathy may occur with long term use. Rash, seizures due to hypoglycemia, sinus bradycardia, heart block. Iv: mix with saline only; do not exceed 50mg/min. Advise patients not to chew extended release tablets.
