I think my first class with these students would make them interested and curious straight off the bat. In doing this i can present my reasons for why they should be interested and show that the knowledge i am teaching them will be useful outside of the classroom. I think coming off powerful and mysterious as your first impression class is important to show the students that you are fully engaged with the class and what you are teaching to them. I think opening the class with a bunch of big questions can get them thinking, rather than just stating declarative knowledge. I think i would explain to my students that they pay 46 thousand dollars a year or so to go to college. If that is your plan then that is your choice but college is not supposed to be another four years of the same stuff you did in high school.
