Variable: the characteristic or property of a unit on which we take measurements. Data are the observed values of the variable. There are some numerical data, such as phone number, order number, zip code etc. , which are used to identify or keep track of individuals/cases. Population: the complete set of all units that we are interested in studying, census. Collection of data from an entire population: parameters. A sample: a subset of the population, sample survey. Study of a sample: a statistic a value we compute from sample data. Descriptive statistics: involves methods of organizing, picturing and summarizing information from data. Inferential statistics: involves methods of using information from a sample to draw conclusions about the population. Central tendency: the tendency of the data to cluster, or center, about certain numerical values.
