THTR 1020 : Theatre Study Guide Ch. 4
Document Summary
Study guide chapter 4: in ancient greece, there was a competition held in city dionysia. Three playwrights would compete, and each play had a day to perform. Each group would submit three tragedies and a satyr play which would provide comic relief after all the tragedies. Many tragedies had the prologue, which was in the beginning and consisted of the explanation of the tragedy. It was followed with the parodos, which was the entrance of the chorus. There were then five episodes of choral odes or lyric poems that were sung by the chorus. At the end was the exodus, which is when the chorus exits. Instead he unknowingly did everything that would make this fate come true. His behavior shows that he believes he could defy the gods and succeed: hamartia, it is a miscalculation from the character"s own natural behavior that leads to misfortune.
