Document Summary
After the three basic building blocks of music are laid down there is a secondary structure of dynamics and color. These are names for the nuances created by playing on different instruments or using different voices as well as the volume levels of those instruments or voices. Which instruments are used and what volume they are playing at can be a big part of communicating a musical idea. Dynamics are the carious levels of volume, loud or soft. Dynamics can change gradually or suddenly an example of sudden dynamic change is the sforzando. This is a sudden loud attack on one note or chord. Color is the tone quality of any sound produced by a voice or instrument. Timbre is a more technical term for the same thing. Different instruments and voices produce different colors or timbres. The basic four parts of color are: soprano, alto, tenor, bass.
