Document Summary

6. 6 fractions as a step toward algebra pg. One should start with fraction arithmetic, and then develop interpretations which illustrate it. We have a collection of numbers called fractions . There is some way to add and subtract fractions. There is some way to multiply and divide fractions. Addition and multiplication satisfy the any-order, distributive, and identity properties, plus the following multiplicative inverse property x 1/x = 1. We get all fractions by taking multiples of these fractional units. Multiplicative inverse property for each nonzero fraction x, there is a unique fraction called the inverse, written 1/x which satisfies: Each fraction is a multiple of a fractional unit, specifically a/b = a 1/b. The denominator specifies a fractional unit and the numerator specifies how many of those units we have. a/a = 1. 0/a = 0 a/1 = a therefore, a does not equal 0 therefore, a does not equal 0.
