Document Summary

How do we know what the different layers are (use of seismic waves-e. g. which waves tell us about solid, liquid and gas) Crust is made of silicates and granite, a low density rock. Elements are o, si, al, fe, ca, c, na, k, mg. oceanic crust is thinner and more dense than continental crust. Mantle is made of peridiotite (very fe and mg rich, little si). Mantle is 99% solid, 1% liquid, so it has partial melt. Outer core is made of fe liquid; generates earth"s magnetic field. Inner core is a very dense solid with too high of a pressure to be a liquid is made of pb. You will not find everything you need to know about plate boundaries in this chapter. Know what happens where: divergent boundaries: continental rifts (two continental plates) and mid-ocean ridges (two oceanic plates). Normal faults (dip slip faults) form at divergent boundaries.
