He believed that the architect"s education should involve not only the study of drawing and geometry, knowledge, vitruvius"s architect also needed the manual skill to construct his designs. Thus, according to vitruvius, a successful architect was both a scholar and a craftsman. Wrote an outline of european architecture in 1943. Said a shed is a building and a cathedral is architecture. Nearly everything that encloses space on a scale sufficient for a human being to move in is a building and architecture only applies to buildings designed with a view to aesthetic appeal. Trained craftsman, a member of a guild, not a scholar. During the middle ages, vitruvius"s notion of the architect was overshadowed by the concept of the master mason.
