Descriptive: our earliest primate research; out in the field, describing and categorizing. Observational: a shift from merely describing what they see to more long term research projects (10 years) One of the first field researchers that did a long term observation project. Dian fossey: movie- gorillas in the mist. Theoretical: incorporating different theories of the behavior of primates. Behavioral ecology: looks at the relationship between behavior and the environment. Sociobiology: looks at the relationship between genetics and behavior. Primates have 5 digits on both hands and feet. Very enhanced sense of touch in fingers and toes (nerve endings are enhanced) Prehensile: ability to grasp; directly related to the opposable thumb and toe. Quadrupedalism (knuckle walking on all fours), leaping (jumping), brachiation (armswinging, alternating the weight), bipedalism. Encephalized: primates have a large brain, relative to the size of their body: maturation, learning, and behavior k-selected (vs r-selected) Arboreal (vs. terrestrial): refers to living in the trees.
