In the book, ochoa states there being an ambient dead, dead that surrounds those of the. Palo society and that is everywhere at all times. With the dead being such a huge part of the religion in general, the dead is cherished and is apart of those that worship within palo. The dead is included in the daily rituals of the people and are placed at a level that is highly worshipped. With the dead being considered ambient, they are seen as being apart of the people. This is shown through their personal rituals, initiations, and in their material objects. In the initiations, each ngeuyo is connected to a zarabanda from the dead. In this connection, blood is sacrificed to the zarabandas. Blood is a material turn of the dead, that allows for a connection between the dead and the living. This zarabanda protects and heals those that are connected with it, but also hurts those that are not loyal.
