K201 Lecture Notes: Chapters 1-2
1.) The Digital Revolution
-Information Age: a period in history where the production, distribution, and control of
information is the primary driver of the economy
-started in 1970s with the Digital Revolution: the conversion from mechanical and analog
devices to digital devices
-Bell’s Law: states that a “new computer class forms roughly each decade, establishing a new
industry.”
-Moore’s Law: the number of transistors per square inch on an integrated chip doubles every
18 months.
-caused the ratio of price to performance of computer processors to fall dramatically
-Metcalfe’s Law: the value of a network is equal to the square of the number of users
connected to it
-the more digital devices are connected together, the value of that network will increase.
-Nielsen’s Law: network connection speeds for high-end users will increase by 50% each year
-Kryders Law: the storage density on magnetic disks is increasing at an exponential rate
2.) Skills Learned in Intro to MS
-Abstract Reasoning: construct a model or representation
-Systems Thinking: model system components and show how components’ inputs and outputs
relate to each other
-Collaboration: Develop ideas and plans with others, provide and receive critical feedback
-Ability to Experiment: Create and test promising new alternatives, consistent with available
resources
-Bottom Line:
-will give background to assess, evaluate, and apply emerging info systems to business
-it can give you the ultimate job security by helping you learn abstraction, systems thinking,
collaboration, and experimentation
-many well paid MIS related jobs are in high demand
3.) What is MIS?
-MIS: Management Information Systems: the management and use of information systems that
help organizations achieve their strategies
-Information System: an assembly of hardware, software, data, procedures, and people that
produces information
-Information Technology: the products, methods, inventions, and standards used for the
purpose of producing information
-Components of an Information system
-system: a group of components that interact to achieve some purpose
-5-component-framework
-computer hardware, software, data, procedures, and people
-Information: knowledge derived from data, where data means recorded facts or figures

4.) Necessary Data Characteristics
-Accurate: good information is
conceived from accurate,
correct, and complete data that
has been processed correctly as
expected.
-Timely: good data must be
available in time for its
intended use
-Relevant: should be relevant to
both to the context and to the
subject
-Just Barely Sufficient: you must use data efficiently; don’t have time to analyze all the data, so
pick the data that matters
-Worth its Cost: Data is not free (Ex: developing info systems, operating and maintenance, and
processing the data all costs money)
Lecture Chapter 2
1.) 2 Key Characteristics of Collaboration
-Cooperation: a group of people working together, all doing essentially the same type of work,
to accomplish a task
-Collaboration: a group of people working together to achieve a common goal via a process of
feedback and iteration
-Successful Collaboration
-Successful Outcome: complete work on time on budget
-Growth in Team Capability: record lessons learned
-Meaningful and Satisfying Experience: create sense of importance, reward
accomplishments
-Key Characteristics of an Effective Collaborator:
-speaks their mind even if its an unpopular viewpoint
-is willing to enter into difficult conversations
-is skilled at giving negative/positive feedback
-is willing to put forward unpopular ideas
-thinks differently/brings different perspectives
-is a good listener
2.) Constructive Criticism
-Constructive Criticism: both positive and negative advice given to improve an outcome
-must be presented in a friendly, well-reasoned manner
-Giving:
-be specific
-offer suggestions
