Richard von kraff ebing (1840-1902)- father of modern sexology, german psychiatrist. Research used the case study method- very detail descriptions of one case. Published psychopathias sexualis (sexual psychopathy) in 1888- examined what we now call paraphilias. First person to look at what were often sex crimes as pathological behavior, not simply moral depravity, heavily influenced laws/policies regarding these crimes, people could be remitted to treatment by courts. Many of rvke"s diagnoses/descriptions fit exactly what is found in dsm-iv, he was very detail-oriented. Helped advance the field of psychology, spread the idea that a person"s symptoms aren"t necessarily particular to them, psychological disorders, not just an individual"s neuroses. Unfortunately people began using his book as evidence that sex was bad, people"s desires led them to do some pretty awful stuff. Example: girl stabber of bosen, stabbing girls and watching the blood drip from the knife was just as arousing as an orgasm for him, he was a serial sex offender.
