Martin luther king jr. (born 1929; active 1954-1968) The prime symbol of the montgomery movement of 1956 and recruited joann robinson, chairperson of the women"s political council (wpc), to lead church"s social and political. It followed the 1954 unanimous supreme court decision on brown v. board of education which overturned the plessy v. ferguson ruling of the legality of segregation when facilities were separate but equal. In 1956, mlk accepted an invitation to the pastorate of the dexter avenue baptist. The city was known as the cradle of the. Confederacy. it was clear that the city"s black population of close to fifty thousand was on the brink of a new time.
