Qualifications for war : 1,000 plus battle deaths (remember there are some variations for intrastate war as discussed in the intrastate war notes), must go on for an acceptable duration of time (i. e. not a two-hour conflict). Balance of power theory : peace is most likely to occur when power is equally distributed between two states (when the system is bipolar), system level theory. Power transition theory : peace is most likely to occur when a majority of the power resides with a hegemon (hegemonic/unipolar system), system level theory. Power cycles : predicts conflict timing as opposed to whether or not conflict will occur. Power cycles come to an end with a global war: states go through periods of building, power, and global war, system level theory, remember that power in the system is relative. This means that power cannot be created nor destroyed in the system.
