Hypnosis: systematic procedure that typically produces a heightened state of suggestibility. Lead to passive relaxation, narrowed attention and enhanced fantasy. Hypnotic phenomena: anesthesia: using hypnosis in treatment of both chronic and acute pain. Used by some physicians, dentists and psychologists as treatments for pain: sensory distortions and hallucinations: people under hypnosis may be led to experience auditory and visual hallucinations. Hear sounds or hear things that aren"t there: disinhibition: disrupt inhibitions that prevent subjects from acting in ways they wouldn"t normally act. May be because hypnotized person may feel they do not have to take responsibility for actions that occur when they are hypnotized. Ex. subject disrobe in public: post hypnotic suggestions and amnesia: suggestions made while subject is under hypnosis may influence subjects behavior. Ex. telling the subject they will not remember something after they are from under hypnosis. Hypnotic state: special altered state of consciousness.
