Complementary and alternative medicine (cam) group of diverse healthcare systems, practices, and products not presently considered to be part of conventional medicine. Five categories of cam therapies: alternative medical systems homeopathic medicine, naturopathic medicine, Definition of dietary supplements: regulated as foods under the dietary supplement health and education act of 1994 (dshea) Context of dietary supplement research: because supplements are regulated as foods, they are intended for healthy persons so when conducting a study subjects cannot have the target disease or health-related condition. Resources: national center for complementary and alternative medicine (nccam, office of dietary supplements, food and drug administration. Epidemiological studies: migration studies, case-control studies, cohort studies. Basic science/mechanistic studies tools allow us in a somewhat controlled environment, to evaluate cell-specific response and tissue-specific response in relation to exposure to the specific dietary supplement of interest. Outcomes change in status confidently attributable to an intervention/treatment.
