Document Summary

Discipline that uses the principles and language of chemistry to explain biology at a molecular level. There are many disciplines that contribute to the understanding of biochemistry. Biochemistry is composed of chemistry, cell biology, physics, genomics and systems biology, evolution, and physiology. (not sure if this is important he said something in class about it today) A quantitative relationship between the change in free energy, related to spontaneity, and the equilibrium constant. This can be used to drive different reactions based upon spontaneity. Atp chemical energy is used to drive reactions. 1783-cavendish discovers the water molecule, figuring out that bacteria cells are 70% water. 1828-friedrich wohler showed that compounds found in living organisms could be made in the lab from inorganic substances. 1850-strecker synthesized an amino acid in the lab. 1907-buchner won nobel prize in chemistry for the discovery of cell-free fermentation by using yeast extracts. 1830-1905-darwin and mendel are present between wohler and buchner.
