Intro: definition: study what it means to be human by looking at people who are no longer alive. Curiosity: allows people who lived outside the realm of history to have their stories heard. Survey (how to find a spot to dig) If no documents, walk through and look for signs of human involvement. Fly over an area & look for building remains. Crops that grow over archaeological sites are more lush than normal crops: decide which site to excavate, which one yields the most info. Lay out the site in a grid pattern: n, s, e, w, horizontal relationship between things there. Test site with surface collection: choose a square on grid and collect everything, dig to see (cid:449)hat"s u(cid:374)de(cid:396) the su(cid:396)fa(cid:272)e. See dirt color change and objects: vertical distance tells how old things are. Excavation: relates to the original question asked, record everything as they dig deeper. Cannot excavate whole site limited people and resources.
