Document Summary

In ancient egypt, art was meant to represent the values important to their civilization, with a main focus on the afterlife. Their most important form of art was known as funerary art, which consisted of collections of paintings depicting the deceased meeting gods in afterlife, frescoes on tomb walls, and death masks. Contrary to that, the work of the ancient near east was created to commemorate events or to praise/worship their rulers or gods. Both ancient egyptian and near eastern art also focused on the depiction of the human figure. However, the way egyptians depicted humans in paintings was unlike anywhere else: each body part was shown from its clearest angle. Egyptians also manipulated the size of the figures by status in society rather than distance from foreground, an artistic choice also practiced in the near east. The artwork of the ancient near eastern civilization was centered around their religion as well.
