Document Summary

Phaedo study questions: what does socrates mean when he says, . the one aim of those who practice philosophy in the proper manner is to practice for dying and death ? (phaedo, p. 101). Socrates states to be a good philosopher, one must deny bodily needs. The philosopher must only focus on immaterial objects. By doing so, the philosopher is separating the soul from the body (this is how socrates describes death- the separation of soul and body). By practicing true philosophy, the philosopher is thinking only of holy, immaterial things, such as virtue and truth. Once one dies and leaves his body behind, he can ignore bodily needs and purely focus on philosophical ideas. This is why a good philosopher is practicing for death and dying. Socrates states that everything comes from the opposite. Ex: for things be be large the have to start of small, for something to be strong it must start off weak.
