76 views1 pages
Do you think Jean-Paul Sartre would consider any of the characters in Brave New World authentic?
Which ones and why? Explain your answer fully.
o Sartre defines authenticity as fully and honestly accepting our own total freedom and
responsibility. Based off his definition of being authentic Sartre would consider
Helmholtz Watson & Mustapha Mond as an authentic character.
Throughout the entire novel, he is seen as an Alpha Plus character: always turning
down women and sex. However he has an intellectual curiosity which mirrors
that of the true reality in life. As the plot progresses, his curiosity turns into a
search for something greater than he has experienced.
He has the freedom from the social lottery, being an Alpha Plus, so the stage is set
for his search to write something with the passion of Othello.
The world Creator insists that there is nothing in the modern word like
shakespeare, but Helmholtz gravitates to the one thing that the World State
cannot control: Weather.
In chapter 16, Helmholtz bernard and john are brought in for questioning after the
soma riot. John attempts to explain why new literature and ideas need to be
exposed to the rest of the world state. John wants something new, something with
passion and intensity of shakespeare but on a subject matter that they can
understand. Its at this point, the helmholtz adds in that this is exactly what he
is searching to write about. however, mond counters that the lower class would
not understand just like the Deltas not comprehending the reasoning behind the
riot.
This shows how helmholtz, even as an Alpha Plus is searching for something real
and in literature and ideology. Regardless of what other people can/cannot
understand fully. He is accepting of his freedom and feels a responsibility to
follow his instinctual premonitions about the weather.
Mond: envisioned a world he wanted, no one influenced him and got rid off the old
world. Got rid of relationships, families, and children. Makes all the decisions that
he wants too. But as I make the laws here, I can also break them. No one is
above him, he is the world controller. Created his own essence, and made others
lives inauthentic by controlling them as a world leader.
