Diff btwn contemporary and earlier: more ppl are living in urban more now for 1st time in history, larger cities are no longer in us and europe but are in africa, latin. Luxuries : emancipatory- putting people @ equal rights if its old, expanding- new rights of the people. 4 stages of social movements: emergence, coalition, bureaucratization, decline/ disappearance and dying down. Occupy movement started in one area but spread to others, communication allows for opportunity for concern and organization to spread to other countries, societies and places o. Read: manuel kastel, graber and yuqui, kim phillips-fine, Political islam: gov"t used to have ties w/ islam but now there"s a dispute and after. 9/11 they were considered terrorist: religion is islam, but when religious teaching is associated w/ purpose of doing things in order to gain political power. Problems w/ clash of civilizations: 7 civilizations: us or western hemisphere, south- latin america, Israeli- palestinian conflict: read: wade and robinson.
