Culture: the learned, socially transmitted customs, knowledge, material objects , and behavior. The roles of language and values in culture. Language: an abstract system of word meanings and symbols for all aspects of culture. It includes speech, written characters, numerals , symbols, and gestures and expressions of nonverbal communication. Values: collective conceptions of what is considered good, desirable, and proper or bad, undesirable, and improper. Values influence behavior and serve as criteria for evaluating others. Interdependence: is a dynamic of being mutually responsible to and sharing a common set of principles with others. What is a subculture, counterculture and their differences. Subculture: a segment of society that shares a distinctive pattern of mores, folkways, and values that differ from the pattern of the larger society. Counterculture: when subculture deliberately opposes certain aspect of the larger culure. Ethnocentrism: refers to the tendency to assume that one"s own culture and ways of life represent the norm or are superior to others.
