Colonialism is important if we wish to understand crime in canada because it relates to the origins of policing. For instance, considering how the nwmp (which has now transformed into the rcmp) focused on criminalizing aboriginal groups and ensuring their proper setlement in the reserves in the past (strange, For a long ime, laws have been ied to morality (liquor laws being a primary example), which itself has been coningent and dependent on historical circumstances and poliical needs. Policing the poor, immigrants, and aboriginals was considered normal; with the police serving as the reproducers of social order (the status quo) and morality. The focus of policing even today has not really shited away from the marginalized and racialized classes. According to erickson, the police sill only exist as reproducers of the status quo to keep the lower orders in their place. The indian act and residenial schools are great examples of how this is done.
