Localized representations of memory: classical conditioning is where pairing two stimuli changes the response to one of them. Also the way they learn varies from one situation to another: lashley"s search for the engram. Engram is the physical representation of what has been learned. His research found that cuts had no effect on performance. Then he tried to remove parts of the cortex, had more damage if more was removed. Proposed equipotentiality, where all parts of the cortex contribute equally to complex behaviours and any part of the cortex can substitute for another. Also mass action, where cortex works as a whole and more cortex is better. Researchers found that his conclusions rested on unnecessary assumptions: the modern search for the engram. Thompson wanted to find the location of learning.
