Pols 2645 test 1: compare the two accounts of the soul in the republic. In book 3 at 435: there is desire, thumos (anger) and reason . The principle of division is the principle of non contradiction. *the principle of non contradiction: the same thing cannot undergo opposite operations in the same respect at the same time. Example: hands cannot be moving and not moving at the same time in the same way. *reason often contradicts appetite and so they are separate. Example: i want a soda (desire) but its unhealthy. The part that wants the soda is desire (appetite) The part that says don"t drink it because its unhealthy is reason. Since there is conflict between wanting to drink the soda and not wanting to drink it, it is clear that there are two parts of the soul. He calls the first two parts appetite (desire) and reason. Spirit is the third part of the soul.
