Here we look at moons of jupiter and saturn. Please remember, the definition of a moon is strictly based on orbit. It has nothing to do with size, shape or composition. Both jupiter and saturn have dozens of moons, but only a few are large bodies Most are small - too small even to be round. Here we will look at the 4 major moons that were discovered by. Galileo in the early 1600"s (they are often referred to as the galilean moons after their discoverer) see also figure 8. 41 of text for interior structures of these four moons. For jupiter"s moons, jupiter"s strong gravitational field affects them significantly in a couple of different ways. Because of the gravitational force, the same side of these moons always point toward jupiter, in the same way earth"s moon always has the same face towards earth. Io orbits jupiter every 1. 8 days, europa every 3. 6 days and ganymede every 7. 2 days.
