Document Summary

Propaganda, in the light of the definition we have adopted, involves manipulation of some kind. That is to say, it involves some form of misleading communication, emotional pressure, appeals to the subconscious, and suchlike. In all such cases, the autonomy of individuals is infringed, unless it is clear that these same individuals give approval to this activity. So, propaganda is bad when it violates freedom, but in some situations we may freely decide to have our freedom violated. We may prefer not to look into things, especially political, moral and religious topics for ourselves. But normally, most of us don"t want to be manipulated and we value our freedom and autonomy. * this last sense of freedom (autonomy) is the freedom that really matters when we say that propaganda infringes our autonomy. It"s the idea of freedom that is most relevant when we say we value informed consent".
