1497: john cabot (english) discovers the land of cipango which was full of spices and gold and also discovered the deposits of cod. 1530 1540: jacques cartier (france) explores the gulf of st. lawrence. He traded fur with the natives and gave them metals, 1608: champlain founded new france and quebec city. He had company that was a monopoly of fur trade in canada which he developed by killing competitors. Mercantile system was used to benefit france, 1763. Arrived in new france 1719, he could invest on behalf of the french government. He invested in different sorts of entrepreneurial activities such as tobacco products, buffalo domestication and glue manufacturing. He also invested heavily in saint-maurice ironworks from 1729-1741, which was the first iron work factory in canada, he couldn"t maintain the quality and the heat required for the iron hence he had to declare bankruptcy in 1741. 19th century: timber was a primary canadian staple.
