Different values that conflict with dominant values, breakdown in controls creating delinquency. Parents & neighbours may support delinquency, lack of legitimate means. M: pressures on youth crime create crime & delinquency. Youth in poor areas don"t have legitimate access to. American dream creating 5 adaptation, which create criminality. L: societal negative reaction to primary deviance leads to negative status; if negative status becomes master status of person, causes delinquency (self- fulfilling prophecy) Weakness: doesn"t take underlying crime; don"t help problem. Strengths: explains how social environments can cause crime/delinquency. S & m: focus was on chicago, not everyone in the different areas conform to their surroundings.
