E. g. synthesis of atp using an electron transport chain. Must have evolved very early before group split. Photosynthesis - ability to make organic molecules from carbon dioxide, using energy from sunlight, originating in prokaryotes: earliest photosynthetic prokaryotes did not have oxygen-producing photosynthesis. Oxygenic photosynthesis in plants, algae & certain prokaryotes like cyanobacteria produce glucose from co2 & h2o.
