Introduction
What is Art?
• Needn't be beautiful, or even object entered, may address intellect more than senses
• May aim to unsettle or challenge us rather than please or delight
Potentially Problematic Definitions
• The quality production expression or realm of what is beautiful or of more than ordinary
significance
• The conscious use of imagination in the production of objects intended to be contemplated or
appreciated as beautiful, as in the arrangement of forms sounds or words
• Distinguished from practicality, objects intended for practical use
• They are problematic because of the limitation of media and the need for a definition of beauty
and appreciation, as well as the limitations of practicality
• Intent is needed
What is Art History?
• Not art appreciation; requires knowledge of historical context of an artwork
• Seeking to understand what an artwork meant in its original context or in a subsequent
context both in terms of production and reception
• We look for primary sources as well as previous interpretations
• Personal observation is fundamental
• Break down- assessment of physical properties
analysis of visual/formal structure
• Can be concerned with establishing chronology or identifying an objects style
• Formal analysis - methods and questions that concern the visual and physical aspects of the
work, seeking answers within the work without referencing outside sources extensively

• Value/Tonality- degree of lightness/darkness

• Perspective and foreshortening
