The Primary Goal of International Service-Learning
The primary goal of international service-learning involves the “intentional
goal of developing in students a set of knowledge, skills dispositions that are
focused on global citizenship” (Plater, Jones, Bringle, & Clayton, 2009,
p.485). More specifically, this knowledge, skills and disposition could include
“increasing global awareness and knowledge, deepening cross-cultural
understanding and an appreciation of diversity, and of experiencing (some
other part of) the world first hand (Plater, Jones, Bringle, & Clayton, 2009,
p.485)
Benefits and Challenges of International Volunteerism and
Engagement
Benefits
International volunteerism brings with it a number of benefits, and has been
linked to various positive outcomes. But first, I would like you to think a bit
about these on your own. What kinds of benefits do you think exist? I'd like
you to think about both the social/cultural and personal benefits. So think
both broadly and specific to the individual.
Challenges
While there are many benefits associated with international volunteerism
and engagement, there are also some challenges. Again, take a moment to
think about some potential challenges. You may have even already come up
with a few great ideas when reflecting for assignment 1. When you are done

Identity
A common feeling experienced by individuals participating in these programs
is that they challenge you to reconsider who you are, and your role within
your community and the global world.
International volunteering will challenge you.
You may be exposed to:
New cultural environments, and
New languages and different ways of life.
You will also be challenged to think critically about and reconsider your
stereotypes and beliefs. You may further question your current
understanding of the world. It may be your understanding of “small” things,
such as road rules or methods of eating. However, it may be the drastically
different political, social, or economic systems you encounter that force you
