Document Summary

2016-01-27: also called the tanakh, it is collection for 24 books written between 1400 bce and 425 bce. It contains two love commandments: love god and love your neighbor. It is called the hebrew bible because it is an important religious text to the ancient hebrews (later called jews) and it was written mainly in hebrew. Hesed: this is the hebrew word found in the tanakh to refer to the love one should have for their neighbor. It can mean love as a form of specific kindness or loyalty; it is not general. It is different from loving god because it does not contain the element of vulnerability or fear that comes with loving god. 3 kinds of love: they are: eros, friendship and self-giving, they are often entiwined and complicated, like in the story of david and jonathan, eros and friendship (or philia) are later found in greek philosophy.
