Defined as a process in which a professionally trained therapist systematically uses techniques derived from psychological principles to relieve psychological distress or facilitate growth. Theoretical orientations: main types of psychotherapy are psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioural, humanistic-experiential, and eclectic or integrative. May be practiced by professionals from many disciplines but clinical psychologists are main providers. Groups more likely to seek therapy are: females, those w uni education, young to middle-aged adults. Many psychotherapies are short term (20 or less sessions) and majority attend fewer than 10 sessions. Freud developed psychodynamic theory (notion that psychological problems have their roots in early childhood and in unconscious conflicts) Freudian psychoanalysis goal: help patients understand unconscious factors that control their behavior. Classic psychoanalysis is intensive and long in duration. Patients obtain insight into their problems + learn how the past continues to affect them. Five basic techniques of freudian analysis: (1) free association (2) dream interpretation (3) interpretation (4) analysis of resistance (5) analysis of transference.
