Intro: have been around for centuries, more recently, we have diseases that are relatively (cid:498)new(cid:499) Infec diseases are the leading cause of death globally: most are curable, so why should we still be concerned, bc both the prevalence and incidence of diseases continues to rise (pre-existing and new cases) Why the increase: ecological changes, changes in water ecosystems, deforestation, flood/drought, climate changes, human demographics, pop growth more babies, migration, war/civil conflict stress, easily dev disease, urban decay- buildings, sexual behavior, iv drug use. Pathogens and infectious diseases: contracting/ spreading an infectious disease can be a multifactorial process several factors interact together, host must be susceptible. Immune sys is comp: transmitting agent (pathogen) is present, enviro must be hospitable to pathogen, 7 classifications of pathogens many within each class. 7 classifications: bacteria, tb, staph, mrsa, vre, virus. Influenza: west nile, fungi, protozoa, parasitic worms, rickettsia, prions.
